In Memory of Professor Alan Wrench

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Professor Alan Wrench. To our community, Alan was so much more than the founder of Articulate Instruments, he was the person who made our research possible.

From his early work with EPG to his groundbreaking developments in ultrasound stabilisation and hardware synchronisation, Alan’s innovations bridged the gap between engineering and linguistics. His recent work integrating deep learning and markerless pose estimation has fundamentally transformed our workflows, moving the field into a new era of efficiency and precision.

Beyond his scientific impact, we will remember Alan for his extraordinary kindness. He was never too busy to help, often spending hours on a call to troubleshoot a setup or patiently walking us through the physical connections of our hardware. He cared as much about the success of our experiments as we did, and this year’s conference will be profoundly marked by his absence.

The Organising Committee is currently reflecting on how best to honour Alan’s life and legacy during the event.

If you have a suggestion for a memorial activity, a shared tribute, or if you would like to contribute a memory of Alan, please reach out to us at ultrafest12@gmail.com. We would love to hear your thoughts as we plan a fitting homage to a man who gave so much to our discipline.
